Tips to Grow Long and Strong Nails
Seriously stronger nails:Take a look at your nails and try to remember everything they’ve touched in the last two hours. See where we’re going with this? Your nails do some serious heavy lifting so they deserve their fair share of care.
Forget Emery Boards: Even if you can’t see it, rough emery boards actually break the nail. Instead, reach for a smooth board to gently and slowly file your nails into your desired shape. Ask your Tips & Toes nail technician if you can take your soft emery board home with you. They last forever!
Keep the gloves on: Whether it’s scrubbing a few dishes or cleaning the entire house, all chemicals weaken your nail bed and can lead to ripped nails. No matter how big or small the task, make sure a good pair of gloves is always around.
A daily dose of Biotin: Already have your fill of vitamins? Have a look at the label and check if it contains Biotin. Brittle nails are usually the first sign of a Biotin deficiency so adding some Biotin to your daily mix of supplements can put a stop to the damage immediately.
Nails are not tools: Unless you find yourself stranded on a deserted island, you have no excuse to use your nails as tools. Whether it’s to open a can of soda or remove a screw, avoid using your nails like tools to prevent splitting and flaking.
The art of filing: It may seem simple but nail technicians are actually trained to file in a precise way to avoid damaging your nails. It goes like this:
- Hold the file precisely perpendicular to the nail and file the tip of the nail
- When filing the sides, hold the file parallel to the side of the nail. Don’t edge it into the corner; this can encourage breakage
- As a final touch, shape the corners by gently filing the edges at a slight angle.
And remember, practice makes perfect!
